Hanging Colours - Lindy Fisher
At the end of August, HBLA welcomed illustrator Lindy Fisher to this year's literary event, which was held again at a local waterfront bar and restaurant. Lindy's illustrations of Stephania's Dancing Slippers, Nobody's Dog and A Present from the Past were well-known to many of us. She deepened our understanding of both her illustrations and the text by explaining the intense and meticulous research that goes into her preparation for this work. She immerses herself in the words and then hangs her colours on them. Lindy showed us many of the original pieces of art which have become pages in children's books, and we were fascinated to hear about her personal connections that are embedded in them. She uses a variety of techniques, e.g. collage, sprinking paint with a toothbrush, allowing paint to dribble along the page. It was wonderful to be able to feel the textures and closely examine the techniques she uses. Our local independent bookshop provided a book display and have generously donate a percentage of their sales to HBLA.
'Lit Fix' Event
A plenary presentation 'Whole School Read' followed by a choice of two workshops from seven offered, gave over 180 Hawke's Bay teachers the opportunity to experience exemplary classroom teachers share their expertise in the field of Literacy. These workshop choices can be seen in the advertisement on this website. The entire HBLA committee were involved at the event to ensure the quality and timings of the workshops. Reflective comments from both teachers and presenters were very positive and helpful especially for our future organisation of the NZRA Conference 2012. Some of the presentations will be shared again at the 2012 Conference 'Reading between the Vines'.
