Events:
International Literacy Day Celebrations 2011
To coincide with the opening of the new dental hubs around the Canterbury
area and International Literacy day, two committee members spent the day visiting 8 clinics where they presented picture books. These were gifted by the Canterbury Reading Association with support from Scholastic N.Z who gave us a very generous discount. The books were eagerly received by all centres. It was pleasing to see we were assisting them set up the very important waiting room area. We know that it is so important for caregivers to spend time reading with their children, this is an ideal spot to do so.
Later in the day 70+ Provisionally Registered teachers and their Tutor teachers enjoyed a wonderful 'Pudding and Picture Books' evening. Rob Southam from Scholastic was the guest speaker. Her topic was "Read Every Day, Lead a Better Life." She focussed on the home environment, oral interaction especially getting the boys conversing, the reading connection between reading for pleasure and academic reading, school environment, motivation and teachers. Rob shared her favourite old and new books with the group.
The teachers then moved to three 20 min workshops where committee members shared their ways of working with picture books in their classrooms.
