WRA AGM 2012

The annual general meeting of the Waikato Reading Association will be held Thursday 8 March at 5:30pm in Meeting rooms A & B at the Faculty of Education, University of Waikato.

We would love to see you there as we need to discuss a new name for our council given that NZRA will become NZLA in September of this year.  We are also keen to welcome new members onto our committee if you are interested (no compulsion to take office though as we have most positions covered for the next 12 months).

Directions: Gate 5 off Hillcrest Rd, main entrance to the Faculty.  At reception veer to the left and then go through the staffroom to the meeting rooms.

Refreshments will be served.

                                        Young Authors Conference

The Waikato Reading Association is once again hosting a Young Authors Conference on Saturday 10th September. Two years ago we had nearly 100 children involved in this great experience, and this year it is free!! We have confirmed 6 great authors to work with your young authors, many of them have published work for Learning Media school publications.

Students from year 5-8, from member schools only, will workshop in small groups with at least three published authors and illustrators during the day starting at 9.30 am with registration. Please bring children's names and emergency contact details with you to hand into registration.

Workshops will run from approximately 10 – 11.00, 11.15 – 12.15 and 1.00 – 2.00 and then a session altogether with all of the authors finishing by 2.30 pm.  Students are asked to bring a piece of their own writing to share or work on during the day. They will also need to bring their lunch; children are unable to buy their lunch during the day as there are no shops close to the school.

As one of our member schools you are invited to select up to 6 students who have shown particular ability in writing to attend this conference. Please email children's names,  name of school and any further queries to neilms@nettel.net.nz    Further details of this event will be sent out shortly. The venue is likely to be at a Hamilton school.

We look forward to your participation in this WRA event!

Four Winds (Ngahau E Fa) Pasifika Preschool Book Donation

As part of our community outreach the Waikato Reading Association presented a cheque for $300 to the Four Winds (Ngahau E Fa) Pasifika Preschool in Hamilton. The WRA requested the money be used to purchase picture books for their library. A wide selection of books was purchased including one called 'Grandma Joins the All Blacks' written by Helen McKinlay. The staff is looking forward to reading this book to All Black Sitiveni Sivivatu's son who attends the Pre School.
