Tauranga Moana Reading Council On the 12th May Tauranga Moana Reading Council held its annual Workshop Evening at Maungatapu School - What an amazing night of literacy presentations! Our evening began with refreshments, catch-ups and opportunities to browse through the wonderful resources of Scholastic books. Brian Falkner, renowned children's writer from Auckland, kicked off the evening. His presentation brought tears of delight and laughter as he shared the importance of tapping into children's emotions if we wanted to foster a love of reading in them. It was both an entertaining and informative sharing which we all delighted in. The evening followed with 9 workshops that teachers could opt into – all dealing with enhancing literacy in our classrooms. Our 9 presenters were comprised of classroom teachers, librarians, ICT experts, Reading Recovery tutors and principals. Topics covered Exploring online storytelling (Gail Cochrane); Sharing Picture Books with 5-13 year olds (Michelle Anderson); Discovery Time (Cindy Mawson and Cathy Hardacre); Making links between reading and writing explicit Vicki Knell); Running records – using the information to guide and inform teaching (Bernie Hiha and Joan Hobbs); Reciprocal Reading – teaching reading comprehension strategies (Tracey Kerr-Aim and Katie McKenzie); evidence based decision making in writing Suzanne Billington); blogging to motivate and promote literacy (Karen Mills); Integrating iCT with literacy (Sarah Taylor). The positive feedback from those who attended the workshops reiterated how important and useful the sharing of knowledge is in developing our awareness and implementation of different teaching strategies to benefit our students. Tauranga Moana Reading Council is most grateful to the presenters and to the sponsors who so kindly donated to the success of the evening in a tangible way.
