Newsteam Competition Heats Up at the Sportsdrome
Last Wednesday evening, September 8, was an evening of 'heads down, bottoms up' at the Sportsdrome as many local primary school students competed in the Bay of Plenty Reading Association's Newsteam competition. The competition had 34 school teams competing and consequently, the competition was fierce. Teams of three students had an hour to answer five questions from thirteen categories from the Daily Post. Answers were quickly sent to the judges showing the dedication and obvious practice that the students had been putting in back at school.
In the Year 5 & 6 B competition, Kawaha Point School 1 team had their answers 100% correct collecting the cup and prizes for this category. Second place went to Otonga School Blue team. Three schools, Selwyn 1, Westbrook 2 and Lynmore 1 tied for third place.
It was an exciting time in the Year 5 & 6 A competition as a tie-breaker for first place was needed between Kaharoa and Rotokawa Schools with Kaharoa eventually taking first place. In the Year 7 & 8 competition John Paul College 1 edged out Mokoia Intermediate 1 and Rotorua Intermediate 1 by one and two points respectively. It was an exciting time throughout the evening. Ngongotaha School won the trophy for the new school entering the competition.
The Reading Association has been organising this competition for many years with the support of the Daily Post, Events Venue, McLeods Booksellers, Scholastic Publishers and local teachers and support staff. It was equally fitting to have many students reading and scanning the newspaper as Wednesday was also International Literacy Day.
